This past week, I led an art class and workshop for Vacation Bible School (VBS) at the Haitian Baptist Church of North Dade. I wanted to create a space where kids could express themselves freely through art while also learning new techniques and exploring their faith in a creative way.

Watercolors, Collage, and Storytelling

Each session included hands-on projects—from painting scenes inspired by Bible stories to crafting collages that reflected their personal connections with God. I encouraged the kids to approach each brushstroke or crayon mark with intention.

While art can sometimes be challenging, the students embraced each of the different art activities with enthusiasm. It was cool to see their faces light up with pride when shared their finished pieces at the end of each session.

Connecting Faith with Creativity and Self-Expression

Biblical themes were woven into all seven of the VBS art sessions. . Each child brought their own unique perspective, and created some pretty cool artwork.

I often reminded the kids that there’s no “right” way to create. I believe this approach helped many students feel more comfortable and open to trying the different activities each day.
